ah yes. it was a perfect friday! sunny and in the 80s, some cloud cover, lots of laughs, moving, moving, fast fingers twisting and I didn't even look at a sorrel plant. bliss, to me. Such good people to me,too. And you! I miss you baby.

I took off from work today and worked on the 1/4 acre vacant lot in GR. It was very hot and in many ways as I drove into GR I kept asking myself "WHY"? Well, as soon as I began I knew why. I have been bit by the farming bug myself and encourage you to pursue this. As I worked with ten men and one woman the day just went on and on until only the woman and I remained.....it was so hot but we were so thankful for the occasional breeze and the mist from our trickling hose. People stopped by to talk as we gardened....one man that worked with me commented on all of the fresh tomatoes that he got from the garden last year.....a woman named Ruby stopped by to see if we could trade for some flowers...AND for the first time in 4 years at this garden I see worms and black dirt when I dig not just construction soil....(HOORAY for composting) AND for me it is the HOPE that a garden brings and all of the food to a food desert and also the peace and quiet but also all of the social interaction....everyone just relaxes when they garden.....Josh and I have been talking about a produce store....maybe this could be combined with a mini farm and greenhouse. A friend actually told me that GR is selling off vacant lots for $1.00....something I'm looking into. Let's talk and enjoy enjoy the earth....your produce and getting dirty and running on trails and I can send you sewing machine if you'd like. Love, MOMMY

Get the bike! It's good for the soul and good on your wallet:-) Keep on gardening Bekah!
This weather has been quite different this year, my tomatoes are weak but my habanero chiles, chiles de arbol, onions, cilantro and even garbanzo are doing great! I'm actually almost ready to harvest the onions...oh yeah, on the grill..forget about it! They are delicious.

Hey, I read your previous post where you mentioned that you guys were in Cali. What, no visit to Modesto? I'm family too you know :-) Even though I only met Raul and Daniel once in El Rancho but nonetheless we are still familia! And of course we would love to meet the new member of the familia...you.

Keep on posting!!!

I love this! So glad you had a stress free vacation that was filled with joy. I love that you sported a hay-sus bib for the race. I often feel like running lately but like you I'm sure I would feel maxed out after a couple miles. And where would I run? 10 amazing miles for you! With such views!

Bekah and Daniel,

You two are such an inspiration...here I am in this Rat Race...tired of it, but I find peace with my gardening and solitude all my own...I have planted, onions, serrano peppers, garlic, romaine(sp?) lettuce, roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, squash, bell peppers, onions(3 kinds), habanero peppers oh so delicious, corn and I have also planted two mandarin trees plus one that one of my 'comadres' brought the seed from Moroleon and has given me a small plant..well now it is about 6' tall and this is the third year it has produced very delicous fruit...I am remembering the good 'ol days in El Rancho...man I miss those days...by the way Raul said that he might have his parents come visit this year, I really hope they come because I have not seen them is so many years. I told Raul that he better let me know when they visit so that I may go and visit them...you two take care and please keep on posting I really enjoy reading what you you guys are up to and please write details of all your wonderful adventures with your gardening...

OHHHHH mice....we had so many of them in the greenhouse in October. They were climbing the plants and eating them and, yes, the mice will eat through plastic, wood, paper....all except glass....nothing is safe from them..... YOU must get rid of them because they will keep having babies and they do carry disease. All your food items should be in glass or in the fridge. In the greenhouse there were traps set that had poison in them...the mice brought the food back to their nests. The problem with this is that with dogs if they eat the mice they will get sick from the poison too. I would recommend old fashioned traps...lots of them ....set up where the dogs cannot get into them and also patching any outside openings and there must be many many of them. There are also traps that I believe the mice can go into but cannot get out of. These would also be helpful and safe for the dogs. Good luck but be vigilant....this is a problem.
